Working in Brighton for a Few Weeks or Months? Here Are 6 Things to Look for in Accommodation
Coming to Brighton for work? Whether you're here for a construction project, a hospital assignment, a temporary contract or a few months with a new employer, finding the right accommodation can make a huge difference to your stay.
And we're not just talking about having a comfortable bed.
When you're working away from home for several weeks or months, the little things start to matter. Being able to cook a proper meal, do your washing, get some work done without balancing your laptop on your knees, and actually relax at the end of the day.
So, before booking that hotel room or taking the first available rental, here are six things worth checking.
1. Think beyond the nightly rate
A hotel might seem like the obvious choice for a business trip. But what happens when that trip turns into six weeks? Or three months?
Eating out every night adds up. Laundry services cost extra. And living out of a suitcase gets old surprisingly quickly.
For longer assignments, furnished accommodation with a proper kitchen, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi and bills included can be a much more practical option.
Our tip: Always compare the total cost of your stay, not just the advertised nightly or weekly price. Check for cleaning charges, parking costs, deposits and hidden extras that might appear on the final bill.
2. A proper workspace makes a difference
Working on site all day doesn't necessarily mean you've finished working when you get back.
You might have reports to complete, emails to answer or video meetings to attend. And let's face it, a bed isn't the world's greatest office.
If you'll need to work from your accommodation, look for:
Reliable, fast Wi-Fi — particularly for video calls and remote working.
A proper desk and comfortable chair — your back will thank you.
Enough space to work without distractions.
Good lighting and accessible plug sockets.
A dedicated monitor is a bonus, particularly if you're used to working with more than one screen.
3. Check what you're actually sharing
Shared accommodation can be a sensible choice when you're working away, especially if you want the convenience of a furnished property without paying for an entire house.
But not all shared accommodation is the same.
Six people sharing one bathroom is very different from having several shower rooms available.
Before booking, ask how many occupants share the facilities, whether the kitchen is properly equipped and how communal areas are maintained.
It's also worth checking whether regular cleaning is included.
Worth knowing: If you're staying for several months, the quality of the shared facilities can make as much difference as the bedroom itself.
4. Location matters — but so does getting to work
Brighton might be famous for its beach, independent shops and lively atmosphere, but it's also a working city with major healthcare, construction, education and commercial projects.
One particularly significant development is the new Sussex Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The redevelopment forms part of a major investment in local healthcare, with construction continuing over several years.
Projects of this scale involve specialist construction teams, engineers, contractors, consultants and other professionals, some of whom may need temporary accommodation while working in the area.
If you're travelling to Brighton for a project, check:
Your daily commute — how long will it actually take to get to the worksite?
Parking availability — including whether permits or additional charges apply.
Public transport connections — particularly for early starts or late finishes.
Nearby supermarkets and everyday essentials.
Things to do on your days off — because there's more to life than work!
And remember, being a little further from the worksite isn't necessarily a disadvantage if the accommodation is better suited to your needs.
You can learn more about the hospital redevelopment on the University Hospitals Sussex website.
5. Find somewhere that feels like a home, not just a stopover
When you're away for more than a couple of nights, comfort becomes important.
Having access to a proper kitchen, somewhere to sit and watch television, outdoor space and a comfortable bedroom can help make an extended stay much more enjoyable.
Look for accommodation where you can settle in rather than constantly feeling like you're passing through.
And don't underestimate having somewhere to make a cup of tea and put your feet up at the end of a long day. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
6. What happens if your contract gets extended?
Anyone who's worked on a project knows that timelines can change.
A six-week assignment can become eight weeks. Three months can turn into five.
Before booking, ask whether there's flexibility to extend your stay, how much notice is required and whether your rate might change.
If you're booking on behalf of employees, it's also worth finding out whether the accommodation provider can deal directly with your company.
It could save everyone a lot of unnecessary administration.

💡 Did you know? Brighton has one of the world's oldest cinemas!
Fancy watching a film somewhere with over 100 years of history?
Brighton's Duke of York's Picturehouse opened on 22 September 1910 and is recognised as the UK's oldest purpose-built cinema still operating.
That's right — people were watching films here before the First World War!
And here's the quirky bit: the cinema has a giant pair of striped legs sticking out of its roof. Yes, actual legs. Because apparently a normal cinema sign would have been far too boring for Brighton.
The cinema still screens films today, from independent productions to big releases.
So, if you're working in Brighton and wondering what to do on an evening off, why not swap Netflix for a little piece of cinema history?
